Watercolor: Beginner

This watercolor course is designed to help the beginning and intermediate student understand the principles of mixing colors, as well as learn watercolor techniques. Students will complete several paintings during the 6-week course by applying what they have learned. Often the block holding artists back is frustration when trying to mix desired colors. We will examine the whys and why-nots of color mixing.

Note: Students must obtain additional supplies for this course.

Paint

BRANDS:  Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smith, Holbein, Grumbacher, or American Journey

Bring what you have, but must have at least 2 shades of each - yellow, red, blue:

    Suggested color options:

Yellow - Hansa Yellow, Lemon yellow, Winsor Yellow, Aureolin, Cadmium yellow

Blue  - Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Winsor Blue, 

Red - Winsor Red, Cadmium Red, Scarlet Lake, Vermilion, Carmine

Watercolor paper

  Arches 140# cold press (30”x22”) - full sheet

(Hobby Lobby, Michaels or Amazon)

You can fold them in half for easier transport.  We will divide them into smaller pieces at the beginning of class.

Watercolor brushes (not acrylic or oil) - synthetic, blend, or natural hair

   #8 round 

   3/4” flat

Palette

One with wells and large mixing area, or a large white ceramic plate, or an enamel butcher’s tray

2 containers for clean water & brush cleaning - Cool Whip containers work well

Paper towels - Viva brand or one with NO quilted pattern or print

Kneaded eraser

Fine misting water bottle - Windex bottles work well or liquid hair spray bottles

Wood board or Gator board - approximately 11”x16” or a little larger
