Course Information

Shibori & Indigo

Price: $259.00

Summary

Discover the beauty and tradition of Japanese textile arts through this hands-on introduction to shibori (cloth-resist patterning) and aizome (indigo dyeing). Students will explore a variety of shibori techniques—including itajime (clamp resist), mokume (stitched resist), and kumo (bound resist)—to create distinctive surface designs on natural fabrics.

The course covers both the art and science of indigo dyeing, including preparation and maintenance of a natural indigo vat, safe dyeing practices, and color development. Students will produce a portfolio of dyed samples and finished textiles that demonstrate technical skill and creative expression.

Historical and cultural contexts of indigo in Japan will be discussed, highlighting the connection between traditional craft and contemporary textile design.
