Clay vacation! Short session: 4 weeks of class total

Come learn about the fascinating history of pottery’s role in shaping the course of civilization and make pieces inspired by indigenous cultures of the Americas!  We will begin each class with a short (10-15 minute) presentation about a culture and its pots, and then make pots of our own using some of the same techniques for forming and decorating.  Our explorations will take us to Peru to make face and animal vessels inspired by the Moche culture, to the pueblos of the American Southwest to explore painting patterns with natural pigments, and to our own backyard to learn about pottery traditions of the Eastern Cherokee.  In the process we will learn about how to make pots with tools found in nature, process wild clay for pigment, and conclude by firing some of our pieces in a smoke firing!  Basic knowledge of coil building is not required, but is a helpful prerequisite for this class
